About Polygonal Lasso Tool

POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL:

In our previous tutorial we have finished with “The Lasso Tool”.

Now, move to Polygonal Lasso Tool. This tool is similar to Lasso Tool. But, unlike Lasso tool it reduces our efforts in holding down mouse left button until our work done. Instead of holding down mouse button, we have to simply click on various points along the edges of an image to create a selection outline. This is a straight line selection tool.

To understand more, follow the steps:

1. Open an image. To do this go to file menu and click on open option and browse image from your hard drives or simply press CTRL+O. Here I took a house with an inner look.

2. Now go to Tools Panel and click on Polygonal Lasso Tool. Follow the image.

3. Now in the image, click anywhere along the edge of the object which you want to select. Then release mouse button. This creates a point called an “Anchor Point”.

4. Then move the cursor along the edge of the object until the area where you want to make a 2nd point. Just click at that point to create 2nd anchor point. Now 1st and 2nd points will be joined by a straight line.

5. Continue moving around the object by adding anchor points where the line needs to change the direction.

6. Now, to complete the selection click at the starting point (initial point) to create an outline.

NOTE: when you are close to the initial point a circle appears at the bottom of Polygonal Lasso Tool which helps us to complete the selection.

NOTE: If you feel that you have committed a mistake in making anchor points just press "BACKSPACE or DELETE key.

7. Now we have selected the image.

8. Now open an image that fits to the selected area.

9. Press CTRL+A to select the entire image and press CTRL+C to copy the image.

NOTE: you can also select an image or object by using any selection tool and press CTRL+C to copy the image. But that image must fit to the selected image in the old image.

10. Now switch back to old image. Go to EDIT menu and click on “PASTE INTO” option or just press “SHIFT+CTRL+V” to paste the image into the selected area. Now that image automatically fits into the selection.

Now look at the completed image.

NOTE: Press CTRL+D to deselect the selection outline.
